3. They magnify similarities

One of the mistakes most people make in social interactions is being overly defensive. This is innate and instinctive. But this doesn’t have to be you.

Here’s the thing: We all grew up with values and ways of looking at the world. And over time, we come to make sense of the world through these values.

Hence, whenever someone else tries to attack our way of viewing the world, we become defensive. Why?

Well, saying that your political ideas, for instance, are wrong is as good as saying that you’ve been stupid for most of your life. And no one likes that.

Charming people are masters at avoiding this conflict. Instead of focusing and arguing about their differences, they focus on highlighting their similarities.

And according to the familiarity principle of attraction, we like those who are familiar to us, not those who make us feel like outcasts.

4. The underrated power of integrity

There’s something undeniably charming about people who have integrity.

Think about how you feel when you hear stories of heroes or great presidents like Nelson Mandela. You want to meet them and just spend some time with them because you don’t see people like them every day.

It doesn’t matter how you look, when people feel they can trust you, they’ll want to bond with you. They’ll feel comfortable around you and they won’t mind sharing.

Conversely, think about the tyrants of history like Adolf Hitler, merely reading about them makes you thank goodness that they were not born in your time.

We all love people with good virtue, and integrity sits at the top of this.

When we know someone has integrity, their words carry more weight. Their promises are trusted more, and we want to be a part of their inner circle. As the Jamaican singer, Bob Marley put it,

“The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.”
