Sour foods give our tongue tangy, tasteful, and tying feelings.

The tongue can sense five basic tastes and sour is one of those tastes. If we talk about where the sourness in the food comes from then high acid amounts would come on top. 

Most of the food gets its sourness from the high amount of acid just like citrus fruits. The sour buds on our tongue are the least studied and the most complicated ones. Antioxidants are also one of the most important components of sour foods. 

That said, here is our list of sour foods from different parts of the world. We would also point out the healthy ones in this list which can be a part of your daily nutritional diet. 


1. Tart Cherries

Unlike sweet cherries which have a high amount of sugars in them, tart cherries contain high concentrations of malic acid. They are sour, and you shouldn’t get them confused with their relative sweet cherries which as the name suggests are sweet. 

Like other sour foods, tart cherries come abundant with antioxidants like polyphenols. As for their health benefits, both of these compounds have to be known to be beneficial in deduced inflammation, better brain functioning, and activity. 

If you actively workout then their juice could help you in case of muscle tiredness and soreness. You can add these to your green salad. Occasionally these can be consumed in the form of sauce, marinade, or a smoothie.


2. Gooseberries

These look similar to the tart berries with small round fruit shapes but they have a variety of colors and flavors. 

Acid makes up a huge proportion of their composition. Citric and Malic Acid is the most important ones present in gooseberries.  Both of these acids are clinically proven to have antioxidant and antimicrobial benefits. Just as tart berries these can be consumed raw or in the form of salad or smoothie.

4. Vinegar

This isn’t exactly a fruit or vegetable but a fermented form of grain or fruit. It is abundant in acetic acid in its composition which is the primary reason for its sour taste. 

There are many different varieties of vinegar, each with its distinct flavor dependent on the glucose source used to ferment it. Vinegar is commonly used in salads. Vinegar with more taste can be enjoyed with pizza, spaghetti, etc.

5. Green Mango

Green mango is another sour fruit that deserves to be included on this list. It’s an unripe mango that’s commonly substituted for lime. 

Green mango is good for constipation, acidity, heartburn, nausea, and morning sickness because it efficiently increases the release of digestive juices.
